Art is in my blood. At least that was what my father would tell me and I believed him. He was an art aficionado and while he struggled to feed a family of five children books of the masters and their works cluttered our living area. I remember he would sit with me and show me the great works and carefully point out exactly the the finer points of their greatness.
My grandmother was an Irish immigrant who came to America and found work as a housekeeper and maid for the wealthy who resided on the east side of Providence Rhode Island.
Sunday dinner at my grandmothers was a tradition in those days. I loved to go but not for the reasons you may think.
She in her occupation was allowed to bring home the old issues of the Saturday Evening Post, Look magazine, Life Magazine and National Geographic.
Weird as it sounds I could not wait for Sunday because of that fact. I was memorized by the photography and illustration that these magazines displayed and especially the art of Norman Rockwell.
I would sit for hours poring over and over the photographs and Rockwell’s illustrations. That was when I knew my father was right. Art, but more importantly, photography was in my blood.
I would cut my favorite piks out and put them in a notebook.
One day sitting in my sixth grade class Sister Mary Peter caught me perusing my photo bible. She grabbed my right earlobe and to this very day I can still feel the pain and what she said to me. “Mr. Prendergast (wow I thought that was my father’s name) you are immersed in the devil’s work shop.” My parents were called but I do not recall all the inquisition details other than the fear and that feeling you get deep in your stomach.. Those were very different times and in those days you did not mess with the church.the good sisters and Father O'Neil..
But what I do clearly remember is that the very next day they both brought me into the parlor in our second floor tenement and presented me with a brownie film camera.
I have been taking pics ever since- God bless their souls
I offer this quote 'Every child is born an artist. The trick is to remain an artist.' ( or in my case a landscape photographer)
